About IOGA

Our Mission

The Illinois Oil & Gas Association was organized in 1946 to provide an agency through which oil and gas producers, landowners, royalty owners, and others who may be directly or indirectly affected by or interested in oil and gas development and production in Illinois may protect, preserve and advance their common interests.

IOGA Industry History

IOGA was established in 1946 with the first office on the lobby floor of the Hotel Emerson in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The first president was Will I. Lewis, and their first order of business was to stop the efforts of the state to impose a gross production tax of $.15 per barrel. • Commercial production began in 1905 • Annual production peaked at 147.6 million barrels in 1940

• Illinois was the No. 3 producing state at that time—helping allies win WWII • Once outproduced every country with the exception of Russia and Venezuela • Second oil boom occurred in 1950s, made possible by new hydraulic fracturing and enhanced recovery technologies • 4 billion barrels have been produced in Illinois Basin • Though production has declined significantly, it remains resilient at an average of approximately 10 million barrels a year over the past 20 years • 4 billion technically recoverable barrels remain
